FAQ
What is What Game You Bringing?
A board game discovery app powered by BoardGameGeek data. Find games by player count, play time, age suitability either from all games or from your collection.
Is the app free?
Yes, the app is free to download and use.
Some features require a subscription, but I expect 99 out of 100 users will get everything they want from the app with no subscription.
Those subscription features are:
- simultaneously selecting multiple lists and collections for filtering
- saving filter results to a list
Do I need a BoardGameGeek account?
No. You don’t need any account to browse, search, and filter games. Adding a BGG username is optional. You can import any BGG user’s public collection into the app.
What does "Recommended" vs "Best" player count mean?
The BGG community votes on how well each game works at different player counts. The app lets you filter by these community ratings:
- Best: 50% or more of the votes called this player count “Best”.
- Recommended: 50% or more votes rated this player count as either “Recommended” or “Best”. This does slightly diverge from the BGG definition - on the BGG site, a player count is only recommended if it gets over 50% “Recommended” and this does not include “Best” votes. I feel that this recommendation should be awarded if sentiment is over 50% positive.
- Supermajority: This is configurable in settings. You can pick a threshold of 60%, 70%, 80%, or 90%. This filter shows you games where the number of positive votes for a player count exceeds your preferred threshold. Basically, it’s “Recommended” with a higher bar. I prefer to browse based on player counts set to 90% supermajority.
How do Lists work in the app?
Lists let you organize games without having an account (and setting up your collection) on BoardGameGeek. They are not related to the “Lists” feature on BoardGameGeek.
If you want to use a list to track your collection, create a list with a name like “My Collection”, search for games, and hit the 📌 thumbtack button to add the game to your list. Then, on the games tab or the lists tab, you can pick your list and filter only the contents of your collection.
These contents are saved on your device as iCloud data and synced to your other devices that use WGYB. They do not provide “offline support” - lists only store enough data about a game to support exporting lists if you are offline.
Can I see what games my friends own?
Yes. Add a friend’s BGG username to view their public collection. You can combine multiple collections to find games that anyone in your group owns, then filter the combined list by player count, complexity, and more.
Can I use the app offline?
Nope. If you’re offline, the only thing you can do is export your lists as text.
What data does the app collect?
Product usage statistics. I track what features people are using. How many people have used the 2p filter, or how many people have connected one collection. That kind of thing. I don’t record IP addresses or location, and I don’t use advertising tokens.
Where does the game data come from?
All game information comes from BoardGameGeek. The top 10,000 Games are updated once a week and the rest of games are updated once a month.
User collections are updated once every 24 hours.
Will my data sync across devices?
Your collections and lists should stay in sync across devices using the same iCloud account.
Why can't I find a specific game?
The database includes every record in the boardgamegeek.com catalog. If it’s missing, or you can’t find it by its name, that sounds like a bug - please reach out via Support.
